Why use an absorbent pad?
Absorbent pads are designed to absorb excess fluids which are present in fresh chilled foods. They help ensure that retail packs look desirable when they are on display. Having absorbed these fluids, the pad allows the goods to be presented either flat or upright. This means that they can make the best use of the available space in the chilled cabinets and take advantage of any expensive printed packaging.

Combined with the increased use of modified atmosphere packaging, the pad allows the goods to be handled during this period without the fear of expensive in-house rewrapping. This has a noticeable financial benefit for you.

Which pad should I use for my product?
As a rule of thumb, lightweight pads are suitable for poultry. Whole birds require 400gsm to 2,500gsm water pick-up. Portions require 400gsm to 1,000gsm water pick-up.

Red meats portions range from 1,500gsm to 3,000gsm water pick-up. For joints we recommend 3,500gsm to 6,000gsm.

Fish and crustaceans will vary from 1,000gsm to 6,000gsm water pick-up depending on whether the fish is filleted or whole. Crustaceans are normally packed either shell-on or peeled.

What size and colours are available?
Thomas and Green can make all sizes to fit into standard trays. We also have a bespoke service if you need a specific pad outside of these standard sizes.

Double sided pads are available. We can micro perforate these to increase absorption speed and even out the distribution of fluid.

Standard colours are black, white, green, blue, pink, and cream. Other colours are available subject to minimum order quantities.

All grades are also available as reel stock for auto pad placing machines.

Are your products approved by the leading supermarkets?
Absolutely. We have been at the forefront in development of absorbent pads for the past 20+ years in conjunction with leading supermarkets, tray makers and processors. We were also amongst the first papermakers / converters to obtain BRC accreditation.
